Co-ownership is a good thought if you are seriously interested in attending dog shows and willing to co-operate quite closely with the breeder. What you get is 100%-devotion from the breeder with her help and support and a good chance to get a new hobby as well as to know the world of dog shows (if you are not already familiar with it). At the same time it is easy to have your breeder as an active co-operator and even a teacher. Usually along with a co-ownership you will get that kind of experience about doggie related matters, which a regular dog buyer might not have.
The breeder will also take care of trimming if you live close enough. Usually you do not have to pay the normal full purchasing price, but for that you have certain conditions to fill and in a way to be more responsible to the breeder than a normal dog byer. That means for example taking care of a dog exactly according to the directions given to you by your breeder.
During the co-ownership (max. 4 years), the dog will attend dog shows several times rather with, but also without the co-owner if needed. I am always ready to take the dog with me to shows and handle it if the co-owner for some reason can not do that. But for that, the dog has to be in good show condition for its coat and otherwise.
A co-ownership ends when a bitch has successfully made one litter under the affix of the breeder. That happens at the breeder´s, so a co-owner should prepare to split from the dog for some time. After taking care of puppies the bitch will return to co-owner, who from this on will be the actual owner.
WHY ALL THIS?
Only few breeders have a chance to keep very great amount of dogs home. To maintain the breeding it is important to have good co-ownerhomes where to place out the most promising puppies/youngsters assumed to be potential breeding individuals.
With the help of co-ownerships the breeder quarantees the quality of her work, because in order to breed properly we have to have enough breeding material from where to choose and use.
So, the main intress to place out a dog is to help breeding. I hope in two-three years from making a co-ownership contract, the dog can reproduce its line. Other intress is of course to have quality, show interested, lifetime homes to my pups.
In co-ownership, the breeder is the official owner of the dog and has the breeding rights to the dog. She takes care of all breeding-related costs. A co-owner is a "possessor" who takes care of all everyday costs of the dog. To an ideal co-owner there is not actually great difference between co-owning and actual owning what comes to everyday work and costs caused by a dog.
As a contract I always use the form base of Suomen Kennelliitto (Finnish Kennel Club). That secures the interests of both sides, the breeder´s and the co-owner´s. It considers all important things related to co-owning, still giving a chance to make some unique conditions.
I only place out puppies to Helsinki-area. Exeptions are made only for dogshow- and/or Bichon Frisé -experienced homes.
If you are interested to purchase a Bichon with a co-ownership from me, feel free to ask more! This chance may take little more effort but surely gives a lot when succeeded!
